This can be as much as £400 a week to use the carand have pupils supplied to them by the driving school. This fee alsopays for the call centre staff to do a job they don't do too well andmakes sure the staff get a Christmas party using your money. Not toforget the company directors annual bonus.

Instructors also have topay for their own fuel, which may be up to £150 a week depending onhow busy they are. This could mean they have to pay £550 a weekbefore they start to earn money. If I had to pay out that much beforeI started earning money each week I think I'd probably be a bit of agrumpy old sod. I would have to work 22 hours, even if I werecharging £25 an hour, before I would break even.

This forces these drivinginstructors to squeeze out every penny from their pupils. Timewasting, booking extra lessons, holding back from putting you in foryour driving test even though you are ready. Just so they cancontinue paying for the directors of their driving school to loungeabout on holiday or to pay the call centre staff to be unhelpful andrude as they often seem to be.

My name is Richard Miller and I givedriving lessons in Bradford and driving lessons in Halifax and I am afully qualified driving instructor.

All fully Qualifieddriving instructorsmust display their green DSA (Driving Standards Agency) badge intheir windscreen when giving drivinglessons. This green license proves they've completed the rigoroustests set out by the DSA to become an Approved Driving Instructor(ADI). Nine outof Ten people who pass firsttimewere trained by an ADI.
The qualifyingprocess consists of three tests:

theory (part one)
driving ability assessment (part two)
test of instructional ability (part three)

Once they pass all three it means thatthey can legally charge a fee to give drivinglessons and have proved they have the ability to teach you.

LargeDriving schools like Red, Bill Plant and BSM allow their PotentialDriving Instructors (PTI) to take pupils out on driving lessons eventhough they aren't fully licensed. These PTI's must display the PinkTrainee Badge for this to be legal. These potentialinstructors might not ever become ADI's if they do not pass anyof the tests in the first two attempts.

The driving schools won't tell you that yourinstructor isn't qualified but they will still charge you the fullprice for the lesson.

Check that there's a green badge in the windscreen ofyour instruction car, if its pink then you might not be getting theinstruction you are paying for.

Dont fall for the driving school ripoff

The problem is you might not do much actual driving in thosefirst five driving lessonsand after the first five the price goes up dramatically. They alsosay if you have had lessons before you will not get the introductoryrate. The DSA recommend 40 - 50 hours of lessons for the averageperson to be able to pass their driving test. This could end upcosting you a lot more with an "initial offer" drivingschool over the course of your driving lessons than if you chosea driving instructor who has the same rate throughout your timeas a pupil.
