Young drivers car insurance

Young drivers car insurance protection is recognised to be the highest priced type of motor insurance plans. This is mostly because it is known that younger or recently qualified individuals are generally more prone to be part of a motorcar accident where they are seen to be the culprit. This would seem some what unjust but there are lots of reports to validate that fact for example the following;

•    twenty% of recently qualified motorists would have a crash within the first 6 month of obtaining their driving license
•    An eighteen year old driver is more than three times more liable to have an crash in comparison with a 50 year old

These two simple facts arise mainly simply because of the general lack of skill of the recently certified people with regard to driving the car on the highway without the help of a driving instructor. The various road layouts and lower amount of driving experience means a bunch of recently qualified motorists are much less positive when driving, which ends up in sub par decision making when dealing with an increasing hazard.  Sub standard teaching or people wanting to pass NOW often are the cause of the particular issue.

If more youthful drivers or individuals who have just taken and passed their driving test, took considerably more driving lessons and learnt to drive a vehicle to a much better quality, then perhaps the fundamental skill set of planning ahead and hazard perception could prove invaluable. Instructing people to be able to develop to be risk-free motorists for life is the key to minimising the price tag of young motorists’ car insurance plans long-term.

Males aged 17-25 are regarded to be the most risky type of driver. This may be due to them trying to impress their buddies by driving like racing drivers. Research says that younger men are the most likely to drive over the legal speed limit. Even driving at the legal speed limit it may be too fast depending on the type of road. This is a well known fact and the insurance cover firms take this into account when providing more youthful individuals motorcar insurance policies.

You'll find however tons of varied insurance firms in the UK providing a broad range of estimates for inexperienced drivers. The most suitable thing for a new driver to do before buying young drivers car insurance will be to look around. Make certain you obtain price quotes by a various different insurance firms and then pick the one that you see as the best value. The best value doesn't necessarily mean lowest priced motor insurance, but the one that suites your requirements as a new driver.

A good way to get hold of several quotations at the once is to use one of the many insurance comparing websites. I would directly endorse this as a superb way of getting low priced motor insurance. You complete your driving details one time and the insurance comparison web-site finds the best option for you. However there are some insurance organisations not on these insurance cover comparability Internet sites so it is definitely worth doing the hard work to make certain you discover the best option .

Young drivers car insurance can be extremely pricey which is disheartening if you are not able to wait to get driving on the road considering all the effort you put in to succeed at passing your test of driving ability. Look around and get the ideal insurance quotations and as long as you continue to drive in a safe way you can start to create a history of careful, thoughtful motoring. If you continue to be a you are a good motorist your insurance price will decrease after each year with your no claims bonus. Drive like an racing driver, and you will always keep paying higher premiums for a while.

Choosing a driving instructor

If you are paying someone to teach you to drive, they must be approved and registered with the Driving Standards Agency (DSA). Find out the different ways of finding and choosing a driving  instructor to teach you how to drive.

Approved driving instructors (ADIs): the basics

Why use an ADI?

Nine out of ten learner drivers who passed the practical driving test on their first attempt were taught by an ADI. Learn to drive in Bradford with an ADI.
If you're going to pay someone to teach you to drive, they must be an ADI or hold a trainee licence.
It's unlikely that anyone except an ADI would have the experience, knowledge and training to teach you properly.
Nine out of ten learners who passed the practical test on their first attempt were taught by an ADI rather than a friend or relative. Learn to drive in Bradford.

Fully qualified ADIs and trainees

Examples of the green and pink badges
A fully qualified ADI must display a green badge on the windscreen of the car while teaching you.
Some trainee driving instructors are given a trainee licence so they can get experience before their qualifying test. They must display a pink badge on the windscreen.
If your driving instructor is not displaying either a green or pink badge in their car's windscreen, ask them to show it to you. If they cannot show you their badge, you should report this to DSA.
If you need to report illegal driving instruction to DSA, see the section 'How to report illegal driving and riding instruction'.

How DSA maintains and checks standards of ADIs

DSA is responsible for maintaining and checking the standards of all ADIs. To qualify, they must:
  • be registered with DSA
  • have passed a criminal record check
  • pass a much tougher theory and practical driving test, and pass a test of their ability to give instruction
  • display an ADI identification certificate on the windscreen of the tuition vehicle
  • maintain a high standard of instruction - DSA checks this standard regularly

How to find approved driving instructors

DSA does not recommend individual instructors. To find and choose a driving instructor you can:
  • use the 'find your nearest driving instructors' tool on Directgov to find your nearest fully qualified ADIs
  • ask your friends and relatives to recommend someone
  • look online or in a local business directory

How to choose your approved driving instructor

Top tip

Once you have found an instructor, you need to make sure that they are right for you. Try to choose an instructor who:
  • has a good reputation
  • is reliable and punctual
  • has a car that suits you

Checking your ADI's instruction standard

DSA regularly checks the standard of instruction of all ADIs. The instructor is then given a grade:
  • '4' is satisfactory
  • '5' is a good overall standard
  • '6' is the highest
To find out which grade your instructor has been given, you can ask them to show you their last grade report.

Is your driving instructor working for free?

Driving instructors who work for a national driving school such as AA, BSM or RED have to pay a weekly franchise fee for the privilege. This can be as much as £400 a week to use the car and have pupils supplied to them by the driving school. This fee also pays for the call centre staff to do a job they don't do too well and makes sure the staff get a Christmas party using your money. Not to forget the company directors annual bonus.
Instructors also have to pay for their own fuel, which may be up to £150 a week depending on how busy they are. This could mean they have to pay £550 a week before they start to earn money. If I had to pay out that much before I started earning money each week I think I'd probably be a bit of a grumpy old sod. I would have to work 22 hours, even if I were charging £25 an hour, before I would break even.

This forces these driving instructors to squeeze out every penny from their pupils. Time wasting, booking extra lessons, holding back from putting you in for your driving test even though you are ready. Just so they can continue paying for the directors of their driving school to lounge about on holiday or to pay the call centre staff to be unhelpful and rude as they often seem to be.

Luckily I own my own car and, as an independent driving instructor, I don't have to worry about paying an expensive franchise fee. I will give you honest feedback about your driving lessons, and I will make sure you book your test in good time so your not having unnecessary lessons. I won't be spending money on expensive advertising and have no staff to pay. All this means I'm less stressed and can concentrate on giving you your money's worth by providing top quality driving lessons, at a competitive price.

Here is a link to the DSA's official advice on selecting a driving instructor.

Is your driving instructor a trainee?

My name is Richard Miller and I give driving lessons in Bradford and driving lessons in Halifax and I am a fully qualified driving instructor.

All fully Qualified driving instructors must display their green DSA (Driving Standards Agency) badge in their windscreen when giving driving lessons. This green license proves they've completed the rigorous tests set out by the DSA to become an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). Nine out of Ten people who pass first time were trained by an ADI.
The qualifying process consists of three tests:
  • theory (part one)
  • driving ability assessment (part two)
  • test of instructional ability (part three)

Once they pass all three it means that they can legally charge a fee to give driving lessons and have proved they have the ability to teach you.
Large Driving schools like Red, Bill Plant and BSM allow their Potential Driving Instructors (PTI) to take pupils out on driving lessons even though they aren't fully licensed. These PTI's must display the Pink Trainee Badge for this to be legal. These potential instructors might not ever become ADI's if they do not pass any of the tests in the first two attempts.
The driving schools won't tell you that your instructor isn't qualified but they will still charge you the full price for the lesson.

Check that there's a green badge in the windscreen of your instruction car, if its pink then you might not be getting the instruction you are paying for.
I have the green badge in my window. This proves I have the ability, as tested by the Driving Standards Agency, to teach people how to drive. Whoever you choose to teach you, make sure they have the green license, otherwise it may take you longer to pass your driving test than you think.

Dont fall for the driving school ripoff

A lot of  driving schools in Halifax do "first five driving lessons for...", where they charge you not very much for your first five or so hours driving lessons. The problem is you might not do much actual driving in those first five driving lessons and after the first five the price goes up dramatically. They also say if you have had lessons before you will not get the introductory rate. The DSA recommend 40 - 50 hours of lessons for the average person to be able to pass their driving test. This could end up costing you a lot more with an "initial offer" driving school over the course of your driving lessons than if you chose a driving  instructor who has the same rate throughout your time as a pupil.

The example below shows the price of 40 hours of driving lessons with Richard Miller, Bill Plant and another typical local driving school.

 Richard Miller
Bill Plant
Another typical driving school
£18 per hour
(if you buy 10 hours)
First five hours for £56
then £22 per hour
First five hours £60 then £21.00 per hour
 £720 for 40 hours
 £826 for 40 hours
£795 for 40 hours

As an independent driving instructor I charge the same rate throughout your whole time as a pupil. If you buy 10 hours a £180 then you can do the same when they run out. So there are no hidden surprises or extra costs halfway through your course of lessons. If you start with me on a deal, then you continue to get that deal until you pass. Its no coincidence that you cannot see the lesson rate on these other driving schools' websites for the price after your initial deal. They don't want you to see that bit.
